Help Needed for Aluminium and Magnesium Alloy Stampings

A good friend of mine emailed the other day. People think I am driven and passionate about the die industry. I don’t hold a candle to Erkan. He reminds me of me 20 years ago.

I am giving him some help offline, but perhaps you can lend him some of your expertise as well. Here is his note:

Hello Tim,

I follow your web-site regularly. I am doing my master of science degree at mechanical engineering department here in Bursa-Turkey.

I passed all exams and finally started to doing my thesis. my thesis is “To formability of low-metal alloys of automobiles body sheet-metal parts”.

I am working with aluminum and magnesium alloys. Do you have any ideas to give me about these topics ? Where are we in these topics at now as die industry ?

Thanks,

Erkan Aybaraz

Please click here to email Erkan directly. You can also leave a comment on this post or contact me through the contact page.

Congratulations to Erkan, by the way, on nearing the completion of his MS degree. That is a tough program … you make me proud.

Alltop. I don't know how I got there either.

  1. Congratulations indeed!
Warm forming is an increasingly common way to work with the formability challenges of Al and Mg sheet. Depending on your interests, studies could be done on
-effect of engineered lubricants as a function of temperature
-effect of die coatings as a function of temperature
    - effect of strain path as a function of temperature.

You might also want to check metalformingmagazine.com and thefabricator.com and search for important terms. This will let you know where the efforts are currently focused. You can also look at the websites of universities where Al and Mg sheet projects are underway. This will also give you an idea where professors are currently getting research funding – which is a strong indication of the topics of interest to industry.

    Best of luck!

Thanks for the great info Danny!

And thanks for taking the time to read my blog … if you ever want to guest post, let me know – you are “the man” when it comes to metallurgy and formability.

  3. Kind words – thanks!
… And I just noticed a previous entry of yours: major congrats on the Tower opportunity. It should be a blast!

Just thinking of you after chatting with Matt and Gilbert at Tesla.

Am serious about guest blogging … just say the word.

Yeah, I am pumped up about Tower – great organization on the right path. I am blessed to be joining such a great company.

Will be blogging soon on what happened with Speedraft and such (breaks my heart).

  5. I will be taking you up on the blogging offer. My challenge is to be sufficiently disciplined to have 2-3 postings a week. The Self Proclaimed Die Expert is my idol when it comes to regular posting.

I don’t know the details, but I think the Speedraft/ToolPax experience would make a good story (albeit with an ending that you didn’t want). I’m guessing that any engineering-based entrepreneur, especially those of us who didn’t expect to need to move from our previous company, would benefit from the lessons learned.

  6. Sounds good …

Yeah, it did not end well – will post on that next week.

It has prepared me for other things on a smaller scale.

Speaking of lessons learned, if you decide you want to ever blog regularly on your site, I can help you get setup.

I have setup five blogs now – three of which I actively add content to.

DieGuy.com, of course, is my main site. I am in a prototype phase with a “startup” that will be subscription-based at http://www.diestandards.com.

  7. to return to the original question: Aluminum and Magnesium alloys and forming techniques.

At SME we are in the process of re-purposing the “Forming and Fabricating Technical Community: Hydroforming Techgroup” to address not only hydroforming but also what one might call other “novel” or “alternative” press forming for sheets and tubes.

Warmforming, super-plastic, Quick-plastic, retrogressive forming, and Hot-stamping are some of the topics of interest for the new group chair Dr. Serhat Kaya. We hope to get more people like Erkan active in the Technical Communities at SME.

(I am my own hero too, Danny. Though I can’t say that my posts have been that frequent either)
